GNECS donates hundreds of eggs to La Wireless 3 and 4 cluster of schools and Accra Psychiatric Hospital

The Ghana National Egg Campaign Secretariat (GNECS) as part of the celebration of World Egg Day has donated hundreds of cooked eggs to school children at the La Wireless 3 and 4 cluster of schools and patients at the Accra Psychiatric Hospital respectively in Accra.
The gesture forms part of the commitment of the Secretariat to enhance the nutritional values of Ghanaians about the consumption of eggs and its health benefits.
Addressing teachers and children at the La Wireless cluster of schools, the Coordinator of Ghana National Egg campaign Secretariat, Mrs. Comfort Kyerewa Acheampong said the World Egg Day was instituted on the global calendar 25 years ago and it’s currently celebrated in 40 countries around the world including Ghana.
She said the consumption of eggs has numerous health benefits including the human eye, brain, blood, muscle, bone, heart, stomach and therefore urged the citizenry to at least eat one egg a day.
She said eggs are one of the essential ingredients in the kitchen and can be prepared in a variety of ways such as cooking, fried, baked and have a high protein content and contains large quantity of dietary food supplements for good human growth.
In a remark, the Programme Officer (Agriculture) of Ghana School Feeding Programme, Mr. Seth Offei commended the management of Ghana National Egg Secretariat for their nutritional support for the school children and urged others in the poultry value chain to emulate the shining example.
He however urged parents to make provision for eggs in the meal of children and added that eggs have variety of nutritional values which impacts positively on the health needs of the people.
For his part, a Public Health Specialist (Nutrition) of the Ghana Health Service, Mr. Kwabena Kusi shared the importance of eggs consumption and saying it enhances the retentive memory and helps to nourish the human hair, skin and plays a vital role in female menstruation as well as enhances libido in sexes.
Receiving the items, the headmistress of La Wireless 3 and 4 cluster of schools, Madam Rebecca Quartey expressed her sincere thanks to the management of the Secretariat, adding that the donation was timely pointing out further that it will enhance and balance the diet of the school children and appealed to the Secretariat to make provision for the school in the next year’s world egg day.
In a related development, the GNECS officials visited Accra Psychiatric Hospital and donated crates of raw and cooked eggs to the patients amid cheers and joy from staff and patients.
In a statement, the National President of the Apex Body of women in poultry value chain, Mrs. Victoria Norgbey said the gesture is to sensitize the citizenry of the importance of egg in the human nutritional systems for a healthy growth and development saying eggs must be included in our daily diets.
The Senior Nursing Officer of the hospital, Madam Francisca Ntow thanked the secretarial for the wonderful package and said that the gesture ties in to the celebration of the World Mental Health Celebration with the call on government to adequately invest in mental health.
