Black Stars winger, Kamaldeen Sulemana has issued an unqualified apology to Ghanaians after the nation’s dismal AFCON 2021 performance.
“My first dance at AFCON started on the wrong foot with performances as a team beyond embarrassing but very grateful for my debut in this prestigious tournament. A very tough experience with so many learning curves. Things didn’t go as planned and we have ourselves to blame as a team. Sincere apologies . No excuse or apology is enough for Ghana deserves better. Giving up is never an option , we will be back and I mean we will back. Thank you for the unrivalled support & kind messages.” Kamaldeen Sulemana wrote on Facebook.
The Rennes winger was a member of the Black Stars squad that failed to qualify from the group stage of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations currently ongoing in Cameroon. Ghana for the first time since 2006 got eliminated from group c that had Morocco, Gabon and debutants, Comoros. The four time African champions suffered 1-0 loss in the opening game to Morocco before being held to a 1-1 draw by Gabon who were without their two key players, Pierre Aubameyang and Mario Lemina. The game against Comoros broke the camel’s back when the virtual minnows defeated Ghana 3-2 to kick them out.
Ghana earned just a point and exited from the competition much to the chagrin of the citizens. The poor results have led to Ghanaians calling for the head of coach Milovan Rajevac who was mandated to win the AFCON and qualify the team to the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. Ghana will face sworn rivals, Nigeria in the final qualifier for the Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup over two legs in March. The Black Stars failed to appear at the last FIFA World Cup held in Russia after three successive shows in 2006, 2010 and 2014.
