Former Black Stars midfielder, Rabiu Mohammed has insisted that there is more to be done than rely on just “talent” to improve a nation’s football.
The 32-year-old was a member of Ghana ‘s U-20 FIFA World Cup winning squad in Egypt 2009. The former Liberty Professionals defensive midfielder went on to play 32 times without a goal for the senior national team, the Black Stars. The lanky midfielder made the assertions after Ghana’s disastrous 2021 Africa Cup of National campaign where they exited at the Group Stage with just a point. The Black Stars lost two Group C games – 1-0 to Morocco in the opener, 1-1 draw to Gabon in the second before a 3-2 loss to debutants, Comoros.
“What I saw at the [2021] AFCON, the countries that surprised me are not better than Ghana in any aspect football. “But just that Ghana as a nation must learn and improve. “Football these days, talent is not enough. I think we have to learn and those who are learning are becoming better than those with talent. “We learn how to play football so we must make it a point to learn and start somewhere with the national team. “The Comoros have learnt and if you look at them, they don’t possess much talent but because they learnt how to play, they move together so we have to be patient.” Rabiu Mohammed told Kessben fm.
Rabiu Mohammed since leaving Liberty Professionals spent moments in Italy with Udinese, Sampdoria before moves to France with Évian before spells at Russian clubs, Kuban Krasnodar, Anzhi Makhachkala, Tambov and KS Samara. He tried out at Spanish clubs Gimnastic and Xerez prior leaving Liberty Professionals.
