Some Ghanaian coaches have been earmarked for the vacant Black Stars job ahead of the final 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers in March.
The Black Stars are currently without a coach following the exit of Serbian trainer, Milovan Rajevac after a horrible 2021 AFCON campaign in Cameroon. Ghana for the first time since 2006 were kicked out of the group stage by a less fancied side at the 33rd edition of the continental festival. The four time African champions fell to North African giants, Morocco in the opening game at the Ahmadou Ahidjo Stadium before giving away a goal to draw 1-1 against Gabon. The West African nation was thrown into a state of shock when debutants, Comoros put three goals past Ghana with the Black Stars replying twice to exit with just a point in Group C.
The dismal performance elicited rage among Ghanaians with a larger percentage of the almost 30 million population calling for the head of the head coach, Milovan Rajevac. A crunch meeting between the Ghana Football Association and the Sports Ministry ended with the latter calling for the reconstitution of the Black Stars Management Team and the subsequent review of the work of the technical team. Rajevac’s service has since been dispensed with as Ghana prepares to face West African rivals, Nigeria in the final 2022 FIFA World Cup Qualifier in March. Ghana needs to fix the technical team as quickly as possible or failure to clear the Super Eagles hurdle for a slot in Qatar this year will mean further disaster for GFA boss, Kurt Okraku’s administration.
Names of several coaches have cropped up for the now vacant job with former Ghana U-23 trainer, Ibrahim Tanko leading the race. Deputy Borussia Dortmund coach, Otto Addo has also been in the picture having had a short spell on part time basis with the national team. Several reports have it German trainer, Winfried Schaefe who led Cameroon to the 2002 AFCON glory has shown interest in the Black Stars job. Former Kotoko coach, Mas-Ud Didi Dramani and Black Stars deputy, Maxwell Konadu have had their names bandied around as a potential candidates for the job. It remains to be seen who gets the job ahead of the fight for the 2022 FIFA World Cup slot against Nigeria in March.
