The leadership and entire membership of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has congratulated the hard-working farmers and fishers of Ghana on the occasion of the celebration of this year’s National Farmers Day, today, Friday, 1st December 2023.

In a press release issued and signed by the General Secretary, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, the party acknowledged that the “country owes a great deal of gratitude to our gallant farmers and fishers who continue to give of their best to feed and sustain the nation, despite the numerous challenges they are faced with”.

However, “the living conditions of many Ghanaian farmers and fisher folk continue to deteriorate due to the regressive and poorly-implemented policies of the failed Akufo-Addo/Bawumia/NPP government”, the release lamented.

Further stated, “Today, Ghana’s food security situation gives considerable cause for concern as the country ranks among the top ten (10) countries in the world with the highest food inflation, according to the World Bank”

This release noted is a result of the failure of the government’s policies, including its much-touted Planting for Food and Jobs program, to address the challenges confronting hard-working farmers of the country.

Meanwhile “The NDC fully appreciates the hydra-headed problems that our farmers and fisher folk are facing. We have an outstanding track record of implementing policies and programs that promote agricultural production while prioritizing the needs of farmers”.

“Indeed, the National Farmers Day celebration is a proud legacy of the NDC instituted by President Jerry John Rawlings of blessed memory”, it reiterated.

Therefore the main opposition party, NDC pledged its unflinching support saying “ NDC stands ready, under the leadership of H.E John Dramani Mahama, to once again champion policies that will revolutionize the agriculture sector and improve the wellbeing of farmers and fishers”.

“We therefore wish to urge all farmers and fishers across the country not to despair, but to look forward to the 24-hour Economy strategy of the next NDC/Mahama government, which will among other things, drive our agenda to modernize agriculture and promote agro processing, both for domestic consumption and for exports”

Therefore “Hope is on the way and there is light at the end of the tunnel”, it concluded.
