The Sekyere South District Health Promotion Officer, Mr. Joseph Asore, has warned that exposure to smoke from charcoal and firewood can increase the risk of low birth weight, infant mortality, and other health problems, particularly for pregnant women.
National LPG Awareness Campaign
A national campaign to promote the safe use of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) and encourage the adoption of the Cylinder Recirculation Model (CRM) was launched in Jamasi. The campaign, supported by the Oil Sustainability Program (OSP) and the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), aims to educate consumers about the benefits of using LPG and the risks associated with traditional wood fuel.
Health Risks
Mr. Asore emphasized that prolonged exposure to smoke from wood fuel can exacerbate underlying health conditions, such as asthma, and lead to respiratory tract infections, reduced lung function, and even heart failure. Pregnant women are particularly vulnerable, and exposure to smoke can increase the risk of low birth weight and infant mortality.
Cylinder Recirculation Model
The CRM allows consumers to exchange their old cylinders for new, filled cylinders at designated exchange points, making it a hassle-free process. The initiative aims to bring gas closer to consumers, reducing the need for transportation and associated risks.
Community Engagement
The campaign included market sensitization, community durbars, and town-hall meetings. Residents expressed their desire to adopt the CRM and ensure safe use of LPG. The Ghana National Fire Service conducted demonstrations on how to handle LPG-related incidents.
Safety Tips
Consumers were urged to regularly check cylinder rubber seals and hoses for damage, keep LPG cylinders outside the kitchen, and secure hoses with proper clips. The campaign emphasized the importance of safe LPG use and the benefits of adopting the CRM.
