The Alliance for Restoration of Civil Rights calls for reforms in the Ghana Police Service to boost the trust and confidence of ordinary Ghanaians.

According to the Alliance, there is the need to demand for a police service that truly serves and protects ordinary Ghanaians saying enough is enough for the unchecked abuses of power, negligence, and misconduct that have plagued the Ghana Police Service.

The Current State of Policing in Ghana

Ghana’s police service has been criticized for its poor performance and inability to address rising crime rates effectively.

Research has shown that the police service’s effectiveness is hindered by its colonial legacy, lack of resources, and political interference.

To ensure the Police Service serves its total mandate, the Alliance for Restoration is demanding  for Change with the following recommendation:

– Removal of Incompetent Leaders: The Director General of the Criminal Investigations Department, the Greater Accra Regional Police Commander, and the Anti-Armed Robbery Unit Commander must be held accountable for their dereliction of duty.
– Transparency and Accountability: The Inspector General of Police must comply with the Right to Information Commission’s instructions and release necessary information.
– Systemic Reforms: We demand reforms that ensure no officer is above the law and every officer is accountable for their actions.

A Collective Fight for Justice

The Alliance for Restoration indicated that the protest is not just against the police; it’s a call for systemic change.

“We urge our leaders to act now to restore trust, accountability, and transparency in the Ghana Police Service. We will not rest until our demands are met, and we are willing to take this fight to the highest levels of government if necessary”.

Unity and Solidarity

We recognize the sacrifices of police officers who serve with honor and integrity. Our fight is not with them, but with those who have abused their power and failed their duty to protect. Together, we can rebuild trust in our institutions and make Ghana safer for all. Let’s continue this struggle for justice, ensuring no one is left behind.
