The Democracy Hub has strongly disapproved of the Ghana Police Service’s characterization of their recent protests as “unGhanaian.”
In a response to the police’s warning following their demonstration, the group argued that such labeling is disrespectful and undermines the essence of civic engagement in the country.
In a press statement issued on Sunday, September 22, leaders of the Democracy Hub emphasized that their actions were aimed at highlighting pressing national issues and should be viewed as a fundamental part of democratic expression.
They insisted that protests are a legitimate means for citizens to voice their concerns and hold the government accountable, rather than being dismissed as unpatriotic.
The group also criticised the police for failing to facilitate a peaceful demonstration, asserting that their protest was conducted within the bounds of the law.
They called on the police to engage in constructive dialogue with demonstrators instead of resorting to threats and negative labelling, which they believe stifles public discourse and discourages civic participation.
In light of these developments, the Democracy Hub reiterated its commitment to continuing its advocacy efforts, stressing that its actions reflect the voice of Ghanaians who are eager for change.
They urged the police and other authorities to recognise the importance of peaceful protests in a democratic society and to protect the rights of citizens to express their views openly.
“The police’s attempt to label our actions as ‘unGhanaian, uncivil, and unlawful’ is not only disrespectful but also disregards our fundamental right to hold our leaders accountable.”
“The essence of being Ghanaian is rooted in our spirit of resilience, unity, and the pursuit of justice. Our demonstration is a reflection of these values, as we seek to raise awareness of the issues affecting ordinary citizens, including corruption, environmental degradation, and unemployment,” an excerpt of their statement said.
