Former Ghana captain Stephen Appiah has blamed cultural differences as the reason why players born abroad struggle to settle in the national team.

Over the past two years, several players with dual nationalities have agreed to represent Ghana but have found it difficult settling in at the Black Stars.

Inaki Williams has netted only once for Ghana in 19 appearances while Antoine Semenyo has been on and off playing for the Black Stars. Ransford Yeboah Konigsdorffer, Stephen Ambrosius, and a few others have not been able to command consistent call-ups.

“We that we are coming from here we know what it feels like to wear this shirt and these foreign-based players some of them can’t even speak our language so you go to the camp it is not like our time, ” he told the parliamentary select committee on sports.

“After lunch or dinner, we sit and interact but today when you go to the camp because they do not know the culture, they find it difficult to adapt,” he added.

Appiah led Ghana to their first-ever World Cup in 2006 and was part of the team that famously reached the quarter-final of the competition in South Africa. He also played 67 times for Ghana, scoring 15 goals.
