Report By: Ishmael Barfi
The Arise for Change for Economic Growth (ACEG), a political group that supported President John Mahama’s election campaign, has denounced the vandalism and illegal takeover of government institutions by some National Democratic Congress (NDC) supporters.
In a press conference held at the Freedom Center in Kokomlemle on Thursday, 9th Janauary,2025, Accra, ACEG National Chairman D.S. Mahama Iddrisu stated that the group encouraged NDC supporters to take over offices to prevent the outgoing officials from looting state assets, but emphasized that this should be done responsibly and without vandalism.
“We cannot condone vandalism and lawlessness, but we also cannot deny the fact that our supporters have the right to take over these institutions,” Iddrisu said. “We urge them to do so peacefully and without targeting civil servants.”
Iddrisu also revealed that some vehicles stolen by the outgoing New Patriotic Party (NPP) appointees have been retrieved through these operations.
He attributed the NDC’s victory to the collective efforts of ACEG members and Ghanaians, expressing gratitude for their hard work and support.
The ACEG’s Stance
The ACEG’s stance on the issue is significant, as it acknowledges the rights of NDC supporters to take over government institutions while condemning vandalism and lawlessness.
The group’s call for a responsible takeover aims to ensure a smooth transition of power and prevent further disruptions to the functioning of government institutions.
Background
The takeover of government institutions by NDC supporters has been a contentious issue, with some critics accusing the party of promoting lawlessness and vandalism.
However, ACEG and other NDC supporters argue that the takeovers are necessary to prevent outgoing officials from looting state assets and to ensure a smooth transition of power.
The situation is expected to unfold in the coming days, with the government and the NDC likely to engage in further discussions on the matter.
The ACEG’s call for a responsible takeover may help to ease tensions and prevent further disruptions to government institutions.
