The General Transport, Petroleum, and Chemical Workers Union (GTPCWU) has revealed a deep-seated corruption scandal at the Tema Oil Refinery (TOR).
In a press conference, the union accused the refinery’s former Board of Directors of misconduct and colluding with private entities to fleece the state-owned enterprise.
Allegations Against Former Board Members, the GTPCWU has specifically accused three former board members, namely Mr. Apenteng, Mrs. Sapara Grant, and Mr. Ato Morisson, of engaging in non-transparent transactions that have had devastating financial consequences for TOR, sidelining management and workers in critical decision-making processes and promoting compromised staff to facilitate questionable dealings.
Investigations Uncover Irregularities
Independent investigations by the Attorney General and the Special Prosecutor have corroborated the union’s allegations. The investigations have exposed significant irregularities in TOR’s partnerships with private entities, including:
1. The incorporation of special-purpose vehicles, such as Torentco Asset Management Limited and Tema Energy and Processing Limited, allegedly established to cover up structural flaws and irregularities.
2. The suspension of the Tema Energy and Processing transaction, which was found to be tainted with corruption.
Union Demands Justice
The GTPCWU is demanding that President John Dramani Mahama take immediate action to address the scandal. The union is calling for:
1. The establishment of an independent, non-partisan committee to investigate the activities of the former Board of Directors.
2. The arrest and prosecution of the three former board members accused of misconduct.
3. A thorough investigation into the attacks on staff and the destruction of state property at TOR and other energy sector institutions.
Restoring Public Trust
As Ghana’s energy sector continues to face challenges, the GTPCWU’s call for accountability and transparency is a crucial step towards restoring public trust in TOR and the government’s commitment to good governance. The union’s bravery in speaking out against corruption is a testament to the power of collective action in promoting accountability and justice.
