The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has given the Ghana Police Service an ultimatum to provide concrete updates on the investigation into the murder of investigative journalist Ahmed Suale by the end of March 2025.

GJA President Albert Kwabena Dwumfour expressed frustration over the lack of progress in the case, despite assurances from the Inspector General of Police (IGP) George Akuffo Dampare.

“The GJA is disappointed that despite the assurances from the IGP, there has been no tangible progress in the investigation,” Dwumfour said. “We urge the police to take immediate action to address our concerns and provide updates on the investigation.”

The GJA has been vocal about the need for justice in Suale’s murder, which occurred over five years ago. The association has criticized the police for failing to take action against attacks on journalists, including a recent barrage of attacks on six journalists within a month.

Dwumfour emphasized that the GJA will seek redress in international forums, including the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) court, if the police fail to provide updates on the investigation by the end of March 2025.

“We will not hesitate to seek justice through international means if the police fail to act,” Dwumfour said. “The GJA will continue to advocate for press freedom, accountability, and the rule of law in Ghana.”

The association’s stance on the Suale case is not just about seeking justice for one individual, but also about upholding the principles of press freedom, accountability, and the rule of law.

“The murder of Ahmed Suale is a stark reminder of the dangers faced by journalists in Ghana,” Dwumfour said.

“We will continue to fight for justice and accountability in this case, and to promote a safe and enabling environment for journalists to work.”

The GJA’s ultimatum to the police comes amid growing concerns about press freedom and safety in Ghana.

The association has called on the government to take concrete steps to address the issue and ensure that journalists can work without fear of intimidation or violence.
