A severe weather warning has been issued by the Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet), forecasting heavy rains across Southern Ghana from March to June.

The rains are expected to bring flash floods, strong winds, and health risks, affecting areas below the 8th parallel north, including Accra, Tema, and Kumasi.

Ms. Francisca Martey, Deputy Director of Research and Applied Meteorology at GMet, made the announcement during her presentation at the launch of the 3rd edition of Meteorological Awareness Month (MAM) on the theme “Closing the Early Warning Gap Together.”

Ms. Martey cautioned that the rains would come with significant risks, including flooding, damage to property, and displacement of people.

“Flash floods are expected in cities like Accra, Kumasi, and Takoradi, making some roads impassable,” she warned.

To mitigate the risks, Ms. Martey advised drivers to avoid flooded areas and residents in flood-prone areas to prepare for evacuation and emphasized the importance of public safety, urging people to avoid contact with floodwaters, which may be contaminated with sewage.

She revealed that, the heavy rains are also expected to increase the risk of diseases like malaria, cholera, and dengue fever.

Therefore called on the health authorities to intensify public education on these risks and ensure the availability of mosquito nets, anti-malaria drugs, and vaccines in affected areas.

To the farmers, Ms. Martey urged them to use improved seeds, fertilizers, and pest control measures as well as urged authorities to ensure livestock have adequate pasture and water during the season.

The public has been encouraged to stay informed by following weather updates from GMet and to take preventive measures to avoid loss of life and property. “We cannot stop the rains, but we can prepare to minimize the damage,” Ms. Martey emphasized.

The severe weather warning issued by GMet serves as a reminder of the importance of being prepared for natural disasters. By taking the necessary precautions and staying informed, individuals can minimize their risk of injury or property damage.
