Baffoe-Bonnie Becomes Second Female Director-General of Prisons

President Mahama has made history by appointing Mrs. Patience Baffoe-Bonnie as the second female Director-General of Prisons in Ghana.

This significant appointment marks a milestone in the country’s efforts to promote gender equality and women’s empowerment in leadership positions ¹.

This announcement was made on March 14, 2025 in a press release.

Mrs. Baffoe-Bonnie brings over 37 years of experience in corrections management to her new role. She has held various leadership positions, including director of Prisons in charge of Services, director of Technical and Services.

The rest are Chief Legal Officer, Director of Prisons Health, Technical & Services and Director of Operations.

Mrs. Baffoe-Bonnie has also worked with the United Nations Mission in Liberia as a planner, mentor, and advisor.

As a seasoned corrections and security expert, Mrs. Baffoe-Bonnie has been recognized for her outstanding contributions to the public sector, including receiving Female Pillar of Modern Ghana Award (Pillar in Public Service), HD LeadHERS Xperience Award (Exceptional Award for Women in Leadership, 2023) and Ghana Women’s Award (Outstanding Female Prisons Officer, 2013)

As the new Director-General of Prisons, Mrs. Baffoe-Bonnie is expected to bring her wealth of experience and expertise to transform the Ghana Prisons Service into a modern correctional institution.

Her vision includes Improving prison facilities and conditions, enhancing staff welfare and training, promoting rehabilitation and reintegration programs for inmates, strengthening partnerships with stakeholders and the community.

President Mahama expressed his confidence in Mrs. Baffoe-Bonnie’s ability to lead the Ghana Prisons Service.

“I am pleased to appoint Mrs. Patience Baffoe-Bonnie as the new Director-General of Prisons”, he reiterated.

Adding “Her wealth of experience and expertise will be invaluable in transforming the Ghana Prisons Service into a modern correctional institution.”

Mrs. Baffoe-Bonnie’s appointment is a testament to President Mahama’s commitment to promoting gender equality and women’s empowerment in Ghana.

Her leadership is expected to bring a fresh perspective to the Ghana Prisons Service, driving reforms and improvements in the country’s correctional facilities.

President John Dramani Mahama will on Monday, 17th March, 2025 swear in Mrs. Patience Baffoe-Bonnie as the second female Director-General of Prisons in Ghana.
