Workers at the Ghana Airport Company Ltd (GACL) are urging President John Dramani Mahama to remove the current Managing Director, Mrs. Yvonne Nana Afriyie Opare, from her position.

The workers have expressed concerns about Mrs. Opare’s leadership style, citing favoritism, cronyism, and nepotism in her management of the institution and personnel affairs.

The workers allege that Mrs. Opare has created an unfair work environment, where some employees are given preferential treatment over others.

One specific allegation made by the workers is that Mrs. Opare promoted her relative, Lisa Hayfron, to the position of assistant manager within five months of her joining the company as a contract worker.

This promotion allegedly bypassed more experienced and qualified employees in the General Services Unit of the Facilities Department.

The workers claim that there are currently officers in the unit who have spent at least seven years on the job but were bypassed in the promotion, despite being more capable of handling administrative duties than Lisa Hayfron.

The workers also claim that Mrs. Opare has been used by the previous NPP regime to favor perceived NPP employees in the company.

They allege that promotions were made without internal advertisements, and that perceived NPP faithful were handpicked for positions instead of allowing qualified candidates to compete for the roles.

The workers believe that maintaining Mrs. Opare in her position would allow her to cover up perceived corruption that occurred under her management since 2017.

They are therefore calling on President Mahama to remove Mrs. Opare and appoint a new head to bring fresh leadership to the company.

The workers’ concerns highlight the need for transparency and accountability in the management of state institutions.

The call for Mrs. Opare’s removal also underscores the importance of merit-based promotions and fair treatment of employees in the workplace.
