Saha Global, a non-governmental organization committed to providing clean and safe drinking water to underserved communities, has undertaken a strategic zonal tour across four regions to strengthen its Water Safety Plan.

The initiative aims to ensure that rural communities, particularly those in hard-to-reach areas, have access to potable water that is free from contamination.

The tour, which covered parts of the Oti, Volta, Northern, and Savannah regions, included visits to Environmental Health and Sanitation Offices across several districts, including Central Gonja, Krachi East and West, East Gonja, Nanumba North, Yendi, and Zabzugu.

These engagements offered a platform for dialogue around collaboration, partnership, and knowledge sharing with local government officials.

According to Saha’s Director of Water Quality and Service Delivery, Mr. Kofi Duku, while sanitation concerns were minimal in the Volta and Oti regions, the situation in some parts of the Savannah Region—especially communities near the Volta River was alarming.

“Open defecation and littering along riverbanks, coupled with farming activities close to water sources, pose significant contamination risks,” he noted during a stakeholder meeting with local chiefs and assembly members.

Mr. Yahaya Mohammed, Environmental Health and Sanitation Director at the Yendi Municipal Assembly, praised the initiative and pledged his office’s support.

“We are ready and willing to offer our expertise in updating Saha’s Water Safety Plan and collaborate on addressing WASH issues in the municipality,” he stated.

Although Saha Global already operates under a comprehensive Water Safety Plan, this initiative seeks to develop zone-specific addenda to better address the unique challenges faced by different communities.

The effort aligns with the organization’s mission to provide safe, professionally managed water services in rural Ghana.

Saha Global’s impact spans over 400 communities, where more than four women per community have been trained to manage water treatment systems.

The organization updates its Water Safety Plan annually to ensure that water quality is maintained from source to household.
