Caterers participating in the Ghana School Feeding Programme have expressed their intention to appeal to the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, for assistance following the abrupt termination of their contracts by the Mahama administration.
On May 2, 2025, all contracts associated with the programme were annulled without any official indication of when new agreements would be established. Although officials have committed to settling outstanding payments, a specific timeline for these disbursements has yet to be provided.
In an interview with Citi FM, Madam Margaret Larbi, the Deputy Public Relations Officer of the National School Feeding Caterers Association, indicated that the group is seeking the support of traditional and religious leaders to facilitate a resolution.
“Our President has directed us to submit petitions, and we are attempting to reach out to Otumfuo Osei Tutu II for his assistance,” she stated. Additionally, Madam Larbi mentioned plans to contact the National Chief Imam, Osmanu Nuhu Sharubutu, expressing hope that he might advocate on their behalf.
“We intend to send petitions to other influential figures who can represent our interests tomorrow [Friday, May 9],” she noted. During a recent press conference, the association’s President, Gifty Asamoah, emphasized that members had acquired food supplies based on prior agreements with the government.
“We are not seeking a renewal of our contracts; rather, we request authorization to prepare meals until the conclusion of the academic year in order to receive our outstanding payments,” she clarified.
The situation highlights the challenges faced by caterers participating in the Ghana School Feeding Programme and the need for a more sustainable solution to ensure the continuity of the programme.
