Weija Dam Water Spillage: Ghana Water Ltd Issues Early Warning

Accra, Ghana – Ghana Water Ltd (GWL) has issued an early warning to residents living downstream of the Weija Dam due to the initiation of water spillage.

The current water level of the dam stands at 45ft, which is 2ft below the maximum safe operating level of 47ft, and this level is steadily rising.

Why the Spillage?

The spillage is a precautionary action aimed at preserving the structural integrity of the dam and averting any potential disaster. Ghana Water Ltd is closely monitoring the water level of the dam on an hourly basis and has commenced minimal spillage to prevent the dam from reaching its maximum capacity.

Affected Areas

The communities that are likely to be impacted by the spillage include:

– Tetegu

– Oblogo

– Pambros Salt

– Lower McCarthy Hill

– Lower Weija

– Bojo Beach

– Adakope

– Surrounding communities

Precautionary Measures

Residents downstream are advised to evacuate the area to mitigate any potential disaster. The Ga West Municipal Assembly has been instructed to:

– Desilt the estuary to ensure the smooth flow of excess water into the sea

– Remove accumulated refuse along the river’s course to prevent any blockages

Safety Instructions

Residents are strongly encouraged to heed warnings from the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) and other agencies responsible for disaster management.

The public is requested to fully cooperate with safety instructions issued by the Municipal Assembly to avert any unfortunate incidents.

The Management of GWL calls upon the public to fully cooperate in this initiative to prevent a recurrence of past disasters. Residents are urged to remain compliant and follow any safety instructions provided by the Municipal Assembly to ensure their safety.

Stakeholders Informed

The National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), National Security, Chiefs of the affected communities, opinion leaders, and other stakeholders have been apprised of the situation and current status at the dam.
