The Health Minister, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has officially inaugurated the Council Members of the Medical and Dental Council, the National Health Insurance Authority, the Pharmacy Council, and the Ghana College of Nurses and Midwives.

The swearing-in ceremony, held on Tuesday,  May 27, formally entrusts the leadership of these four vital agencies, which are responsible for two primary functions—regulation and financing within the health sector—into the hands of the councils.

Mr. Akandoh urged the members of each council from the various agencies to collaborate effectively and prioritize the needs of the Ghanaian patient.

He reassured them that the Ministry is dedicated to providing the necessary policy frameworks to support the success of their institutions.

He warned them against adopting a business-as-usual mindset.

The council members were also tasked with developing a health sector that is equitable, resilient, and ready for future challenges.

“Your appointments signify not only an acknowledgment of your expertise and leadership but also a call to national service at a time when Ghana’s health sector must adapt to meet both pressing national demands and emerging global health trends.

Currently, we are confronted with a complex set of health issues—escalating rates of non-communicable diseases such as cancers and kidney failure, an aging population, attrition within the health workforce, and rising patient expectations for quality care.

Simultaneously, our vision is ambitious: to attain universal health coverage, restore public trust in our health system, and implement flagship initiatives such as the Ghana Medical Trust Fund—MahamaCares,” he stated.

On behalf of the council members, each Council Chairperson expressed their gratitude to the Minister for the trust placed in them to carry out their responsibilities.

Help build an equitable health sector and prepare for the future – Akandoh urges Council Members.

They assured the government of their commitment to achieving the best possible outcomes in their respective domains.
