The John Evans Atta Mills Memorial Heritage has officially launched the commemoration of the 13th anniversary of the passing of former President John Evans Atta Mills, who died on July 24, 2012.
Speaking at a press conference to announce the anniversary events, Hon. Alex Segbefia, Chairman of the John Evans Atta Mills Memorial Heritage, emphasized that this annual commemoration is more than a reflection on the past.
“It is a contribution to national development. By promoting leadership grounded in integrity, accountability, and service, we help shape a civic culture that strengthens our democracy and inspires responsible nation-building,” Hon. Segbefia said.
“We urge media outlets and civil society organizations to participate in these events. The life of President Mills exemplifies leadership rooted in peace and service. It is our duty to honor and preserve that legacy.”
According to him, a series of events have been outlined to honor President Mills’ memory and promote his enduring values and national significance.
He announced that the celebration will commence with the 13th Anniversary Commemorative Lecture on July 22, 2025, at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA).
“The lecture will be held under the theme “Atta Mills: A Case Study for the Fourth Republic” and will feature a keynote address by Mrs. Charlotte Osei, former Chairperson of the Electoral Commission of Ghana”, he stated.
Mrs. Osei is a distinguished lawyer and public administrator with vast experience in electoral governance and institutional reform. She also previously served as Chairperson of the National Commission for Civic Education and holds the distinction of being Ghana’s first female EC Chair.
Mr. Alex Segbefia also indicated that, a solemn wreath-laying ceremony and memorial service will be held on July 24, 2025, at Asomdwee Park, the final resting place of President Mills.
“This event will provide an opportunity for family, friends, and citizens to pay tribute to a leader remembered for his humility, integrity, and selfless service”, he noted.
The commemoration will conclude with the Atta Mills Memorial Hockey Tournament on July 26, 2025, at the Theodosia Okoh Hockey Stadium.
This event celebrates one of President Mills’ personal passions—hockey—and seeks to promote youth development and discipline through sports.
The tournament will bring together teams from across the country, providing a platform for young athletes to showcase their skills and compete in a spirit of friendly competition.
The chairman of the John Evans Atta Mills Memorial Heritage reiterated that, the heritage has been working to uphold and promote the legacy of President Mills through strategic programs, public engagement, and commemorative events since its establishment in 2021.
The organization is dedicated to ensuring that President Mills’ values and ideals continue to inspire future generations of Ghanaians.
By commemorating the life and legacy of President Mills, the John Evans Atta Mills Memorial Heritage aims to promote a culture of leadership, integrity, and service that will benefit Ghana’s development for years to come.
The organization believes that by honoring President Mills’ legacy, Ghanaians can be inspired to work towards a brighter future for the country.
