Alliance of Drivers Ghana Announces 30% Transport Fare Increment

News Desk Report

The Alliance of Drivers Ghana has announced a 30% increase in transport fares, effective July 21, 2025.

This decision comes in response to the recent rise in fuel prices and the proposed 1 Cedi Energy Sector Levy on fuel.

According to the Alliance, the increase in fuel prices has significantly raised operational costs for transport operators.

Specifically, petrol prices have increased from 12.07 to 12.88 Cedis per liter, while diesel prices have risen from 13.20 to 14.38 Cedis per liter.

As a result, this added burden will be passed on to commuters.

This information was detailed in a press release dated July 17, 2025, signed by National Organizer Ishmael Chobal.

The Alliance also anticipates another 9% increase in fuel prices in the next pricing window, which could further worsen the situation.

Additionally, the Alliance is questioning the representation of drivers’ interests by the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), citing neglect by some drivers’ unions during government meetings.

They argue that the GPRTU is not adequately representing drivers’ concerns and is making decisions without their input.

The 30% fare increase will take effect on July 21, 2025.

The Alliance has pledged to work with commuters to comply with the new directive, although they expressed disappointment that prices for spare parts, road insurance, and car engine oil have remained unchanged.

This fare increase may have significant implications for commuters and the broader economy.
