The Ghanaian government, led by Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, has announced a substantial increase in the producer price of cocoa for the upcoming 2025/2026 season.
Effective August 7, 2025, the new price will be set at $5,040 per tonne, marking a significant 62.58% rise from the previous season’s price of $3,100 per tonne.
The producer price has been increased to $5,040 per tonne, a notable boost for cocoa farmers.
The new price translates to GHC51,660 per tonne or GHC3,228.75 per 64-kilogram bag of cocoa, based on an average exchange rate of GHC10.25 to the US dollar.
This price adjustment represents 70% of the gross Free-On-Board (FOB) value of $7,200 per tonne, demonstrating the government’s commitment to ensuring that cocoa farmers receive a fair share of the global market price.
This move aligns with President Mahama’s promise to pay cocoa farmers 70% of the FOB price.
The current government’s pricing strategy marks a significant improvement over the previous administration’s approach.
In the 2024/2025 cocoa season, the previous administration set the FOB value at $4,850 per tonne and offered farmers $3,100 per tonne, which represented only 63.9% of the FOB value.
The new pricing structure is expected to benefit Ghana’s cocoa farmers and contribute to the growth of the industry.
The increased producer price is likely to have a positive impact on the livelihoods of Ghana’s cocoa farmers, enabling them to earn a better income from their produce.
This move is expected to boost the country’s cocoa production and contribute to the overall economic development of the country.
The government’s decision to increase the producer price of cocoa is a welcome development for the industry.
With its focus on paying farmers a fair share of the global market price, the government is demonstrating its commitment to supporting the cocoa sector and promoting economic growth in Ghana.
