Accra, Ghana – The Foundation for Security and Development in Africa (FOSDA) has congratulated the Government of Ghana for officially depositing the Instrument of Ratification for the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW).
This milestone, achieved on the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons, highlights Ghana’s steadfast commitment to global peace, nuclear disarmament, and the protection of future generations.
In a press release signed by its Executive Director, Mrs. Theodora W. Anti, and issued on Thursday, October 9, 2025, described this achievement as a beacon of hope for both Africa and the world.
“Ghana’s ratification of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) reinforces Africa’s legacy as the only continent to declare itself a nuclear-weapon-free zone under the Treaty of Pelindaba,” the release states.
The document also notes, “This move reflects the visionary ideals of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, who advocated for a world free from nuclear terror. As Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, expressed at the United Nations, ‘Nuclear disarmament is not an Ethiopian dream—it is achievable.'”
FOSDA urges African governments to follow Ghana’s example and ratify the TPNW without delay.
It also calls on youth-led movements to amplify advocacy for disarmament and educate communities about the dangers of nuclear weapons.
Furthermore, the release encourages civil society organizations to collaborate across borders to hold nuclear-armed states accountable.
The release appealed to international partners to support Africa’s peace architecture, invest in disarmament education, and urges policymakers to integrate disarmament into national development and security strategies.
The release concludes with a powerful statement: “Ghana has spoken. Africa is watching. The world must act now!”
