News Desk Report
Accra, Ghana – Management at Ghana Water Limited (GWL) has announced a temporary shutdown of the Teshie-Nungua Desalination Plant, a crucial facility responsible for supplying potable water to several communities along the eastern coastal corridor of Accra.
This shutdown results from unresolved contractual issues and a prolonged lack of essential maintenance needed for the plant’s safe and efficient operation. The plant is vital for providing drinking water to areas including Teshie, Nungua, Spintex, parts of Sakumono, La, and surrounding regions. The decision to shut down the plant was made to prevent further deterioration and to prioritize public health and safety.
In a statement issued by Stanley Martey, Chief Manager of PR & Communications at GWL, the management assured the public that measures have been taken to minimize the impact of the shutdown.
These measures include rerouting water from alternative treatment facilities and prioritizing essential services such as hospitals, schools, and health centers.
“We sincerely regret the inconvenience caused and assure the public that discussions are ongoing to expedite the resolution of these issues and restore normal operations,” the statement read. It further emphasized, “We are committed to delivering safe, reliable, and continuous water supply services to our valued customers.”
The affected areas include Teshie, Nungua, Spintex, parts of Sakumono, La, and surrounding communities. Customers in these areas are encouraged to reach out to GWL for assistance, inquiries, or to report any supply concerns using the following contact numbers: 0800 40000 (toll-free on Vodafone lines), 0302 2218240, 0207385088, 0207385089, 0207385090, along with GWL WhatsApp lines (0555123393, 0555155524).
Furthermore, GWL Management has promised to provide regular updates on the progress and expected timelines for restoration through the company’s official website, social media platforms, media outlets, and community engagement representatives.
This temporary shutdown is anticipated to impact water supply in several communities. GWL urges customers to conserve water and store supplies when available. The company is also working on providing alternative water supply arrangements for the affected communities, as stated in the announcement.
