Accra, Ghana – The Ghana Tourism Development Company (GTDC) is prioritizing infrastructure development to enhance the country’s tourism sector, according to Professor Kobby Mensah, CEO of GTDC.

In an exclusive interview, Prof. Mensah emphasized the importance of digital infrastructure in facilitating tourism growth, citing the GTDC’s Ghana Tourism Marketplace, a platform that allows tourism service providers to onboard and market their products and services globally.

“We are putting together systems that would make it possible for people to procure tourism services easily, regardless of what they are,” Prof. Mensah said. “We believe that if we succeed, it will create a 365-day tourism experience, promoting quality tourism and showcasing Ghana’s rich culture.”

The GTDC is also launching a Ghana Tourism Event Calendar, a digital platform that will showcase events and festivals happening across the country, making it easier for tourists to plan their visits.

Prof. Mensah highlighted the importance of partnerships and collaborations in achieving the company’s goals, urging stakeholders to work together to develop sustainable tourism practices.

The GTDC is also focusing on capacity building, with a continuous professional development program aimed at upskilling tourism service providers, including tour guides, tour companies, and retail owners.

Additionally, the company is introducing a Visitor Experience Enhancement Program (Veep) to address sanitation issues at tourism sites and promote eco-tourism.

The GTDC is opening offices on university campuses, starting with the University of Labor, to promote educational tourism and provide young people with opportunities to develop tourism-related skills.

Prof. Mensah emphasized the need for infrastructure development to support tourism growth, citing the importance of digitalization in tracking data and allocating resources effectively.

“We need networks and partnerships with institutions that share our objectives,” he said. “We are committed to delivering a world-class ‘Black Star Experience’ and urge the public to trust the Ministry of Tourism, Culture, and Creative Arts and its agencies to achieve this goal.”
