Report By: Ishmael Barfi
The National Labour Commission (NLC) has directed four university-based labour unions to immediately call off their ongoing indefinite strike to allow for further negotiations over their grievances.
The unions, which include the Senior Staff Association–Universities of Ghana (SSA-UoG), Teachers’ and Educational Workers Union of TUC (TEWU-TUC), Federation of Universities Senior Staff Association of Ghana (FUSSAG), and the Technical Universities Administrators Association of Ghana (TUAAG), had declared an indefinite strike, prompting the NLC to summon them and their employers to a hearing.
However, only TUAAG appeared before the Commission on Wednesday, February 4, 2026, claiming they were not on strike despite being a signatory to the joint strike notice. The other unions failed to appear.
The NLC has directed all striking workers to call off the industrial action with immediate effect, allowing discussions on the substantive issues to proceed. TUAAG has also been asked to formally disassociate itself from the strike if it is not part of the action.
The directive was signed by Dr. Bernice A. Welbeck, Acting Executive Secretary of the National Labour Commission.
