Accra, Ghana – The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) is facing a real threat of being scrapped by politicians who see it as a hindrance to their corrupt activities, Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng has revealed.

Speaking at a national dialogue on the OSP organised by Center for Democratic Development-Ghana (CDD-Ghana) in Accra, Agyebeng stated that politicians are pushing to abolish the office because it is a threat to their corrupt dealings. “Politicians don’t want us around because we’re bad news for them,” he said bluntly.

Agyebeng revealed that had it not been for the intervention of the former President John Mahama, the OSP would have been scrapped by the end of December 2025 in Parliament. “Why do they want it scrapped? Because we’re a threat to their corruption,” he added.

The Special Prosecutor explained that despite the OSP’s best performance in 2025, it faced significant challenges, including attempts to undermine its authority. He urged civil society organizations to support the OSP and demand its institutionalization.

“I’m counting down my days as Special Prosecutor, and when I leave, I want to say civil society created and preserved this office. It’s your handiwork – don’t let it die,” Agyebeng said, emphasizing the need for strong institutions that can withstand political pressures.

Agyebeng lamented the attempts to weaken the OSP, stressing that the focus should be on strengthening the office rather than individual reforms. “We should build institutions for the ages, standing the test of time,” he said, advising against focusing on individual reforms.

The OSP, established in 2018, is mandated to investigate and prosecute corruption and corruption-related offenses. Agyebeng’s comments highlight the challenges faced by the office in its efforts to combat corruption in Ghana.
