World Water Day: ‘Let Safeguard Groundwater from Pollution’- Cecilia Dapaah Urge Ghanaians

As the world marks World Water Day today, 22nd March, 2022, Ghanaians had been called upon not to pollute ground water in their communities but rather safeguard it to serve it’s purpose, hence source of water for the communities

According to the Minister for Sanitation and Natural Resources, Hon. Cecelia Dapaah groundwater feeds springs,rivers, lakes as well as wetlands into oceans,therefore the is the need for every Ghanaian to save and manage it well for the benefit of all and sundry.

The Minister of Sanitation and Natural Resources Hon. Cecilia Dapaah made the call in a speech read on her behalf by the Director for Water at the Ministry of Sanitation, Donnan Tay at the celebration of this year World Water Day in Dodowa.

This year’s World Water Day was under the theme: “Ground water; making the invisible visible.”

World Water Day is an annual United Nations (UN) observance day held on 22 March to highlight the need for sustainable management of water bodies and equitable provision of safe and affordable water for all.

Speaking further, groundwater, she said is invisible but its impact is visible everywhere, and is a hidden treasure that enriches our lives.

However, she bemoaned that, illegal mining activities, deforestation, pollution from both liquid and solid waste disposal and poor use of land use activities have deteriorated water quality, thereby affecting the ability of surface water to recharge and protect aquifers for the needed groundwater.

The occasion was chaired by, Nene Okukrubour Tei Kwesi Agyemang V, Numersi Mantse, Dodowa.

Other dignitaries who attended the durbar including, Hon Fred Offei, DCE for Shai Osudoku, Mr. Abdourahamane Diallo, UNESCO Representative to Ghana, Annie Claire Dufay, Acting UNICEF Representative to Ghana, general public and school children of Dodowa.

The District Chief Executive of Shai Osudoku, Hon Fred Offei also called on stakeholders to play a collective effort in preventing pollution of freshwater resources and ensuring accessibility to potable water to save life.
