The National Peace Council has urged the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to rethink its decision not to sign the 2024 peace pact.

According to the Council, political parties must eliminate any animosity and suspicions that could adversely affect the conduct of the polls.

Speaking on behalf of the Peace Council, Maulvi Mohammaed Bin Salih said the Council cannot succeed without the input of political parties.

“Our appeal is that let bygones be bygones… we will need your cooperation. For us to be able to do that we will need some amount of goodwill, [and] trust.”

“So, with that goodwill and trust we will be very much encouraged to do the best that we can,” he said in a meeting with the NDC on Tuesday, August 20, 2024.

This appeal follows the NDC’s declaration that it will not sign any peace pact ahead of the elections, arguing that issues that cause chaos must first be addressed.

The party has, therefore, presented six conditions under which it will sign the peace pact.

It wants the Peace Council to ensure the conditions are met before it would consider signing the pact.
