In commemorating this year’s UN World Food day today 16th October, 2020, Food for All Africa is has embarked on a “Feeding Caravan” from Osu Oxford street towards the Kanda Highway in Accra
The caravan would reach 500 low income and vulnerable beneficiaries including mentally challenged,children and homeless on the streets of Accra with food,drinks and basic essentials.
October,16th of every year is celebrated worldwide as UN World Food Day 2020 which Ghana is not left out.
Food is the essence of life and the bedrock of our cultures and communities. Preserving access to safe and nutritious food is and will continue to be an essential part of the response to the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly for poor and vulnerable communities, who are hit hardest by the pandemic and resulting economic shocks.
In a moment like this, it is more important than ever to recognize the need to support our food heroes – farmers and workers throughout the food system – who are making sure that food makes its way from farm to fork even amid disruptions as unprecedented as the current COVID-19 crisis.
The COVID-19 pandemic has had many implications on the Ghanaian economy including the hotel and restaurant sector which has been hard hit and has been paralyzed by the restrictions imposed by the government, inevitably leading to unemployment among cooks and kitchen staff.
As there is no instrument such as ‘short-time work’ in Ghana to absorb them in such a situation (the same applies to the transport sector – motorcycle taxis).
Speaking to the media, the Executive Director for Food 4 All Africa Programme, Chef Elijah Amoo Addo explained that, this programme was initiated when the COVID-19 pandemic led to restrictions on movement and a loss of income for many.
As a way of utilizing foods that where going waste to feed the less priviledged in the society.
Adding that, “At the same time, it encouraged me to intiate the COVID-19 community -intervention programme to ensure that, the most vulnerable could have access to food”.
Following the onset of the pandemic, Food for All Africa began distributing approximately 650 food boxes and over 3000 hot meals weekly to vulnerable families in selected communities with the aim to extend its coverage nationwide.
In total, Food for All Afirca have distributed 7320 food boxes and over 120,000 hot meals with basic essentials since the outbreak.
Inconclusion, Chef Addo stressed, ” we want to use this year’s UN World Food Day to say a big thank you to the many stakeholders and businesses in Ghana who over the years have been supporting us to bring food to vulnerable Ghanaians and also call on corporate Ghans to support the idea of food banking in Ghana.
Food were distributed to the less priviledged around Kanda, Nima and its surroundings.
