The Media Coalition Ghana has praised Ghana’s generally peaceful 2024 elections, while condemning post-election vandalism and calling for restraint from both winners and losers.
According to a statement released and signed by the President, Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), the Ghanaian media played a crucial role in promoting transparency, accountability, and civic engagement throughout the electoral process.
The coalition commended the Electoral Commission for its professionalism and the Ghana Police Service for ensuring the safety of journalists during the elections.
However, the coalition expressed concern over the handling of accreditation for journalists at the National Collation Centre and called for improvements in this area.
The coalition also condemned the post-election vandalism and violence that have been reported in some parts of the country. It called on political leaders to discourage their supporters from engaging in such acts and urged the security agencies to take swift action against perpetrators.
The coalition encouraged journalists to continue promoting peace and national unity in their reporting and to avoid divisive tendencies that could exacerbate tensions.
In conclusion, the Media Coalition Ghana reaffirmed its commitment to promoting democratic governance and journalistic excellence in Ghana.
