In a bold move to reconfigure the local governance landscape, President John Dramani Mahama has revoked the appointments of all Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) and appointed Assembly Members across the country.
The decision, which takes immediate effect, is aimed at reorganizing local governance and paving the way for new appointments that align with the government’s vision for decentralization and development.
According to a letter signed by Dr. Callistus Mahama, Executive Secretary to the President, the revocation is in line with the Local Governance Act, 2016 (Act 936) and the Local Governance (Amendment) Act, 2017 (Act 940).
In the interim, Coordinating Directors of the respective Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) will step in as acting chief executives until new appointments are made. This move is expected to ensure continuity and stability in local governance.
The revocation of appointments affects all 254 MMDAs across the country, including Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies.
The affected officials include Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives, as well as all appointed Assembly Members.
The move is seen as a significant step towards reforming the local government system, which has been a key priority for the government. President Mahama’s administration has pledged to strengthen local governance and promote decentralization, and this move is expected to pave the way for meaningful reforms.
President Mahama’s decision is expected to have far-reaching implications for local governance in Ghana, and stakeholders will be watching closely to see how the new appointments will shape the country’s development agenda.
The government has indicated that new appointments will be made in the coming weeks, and that the selection process will be transparent and merit-based. The new appointees are expected to play a critical role in implementing the government’s development agenda at the local level.
As the country waits with bated breath for the new appointments, one thing is clear: President Mahama’s decision to revoke the appointments of MMDCEs and Assembly Members marks a significant turning point in Ghana’s local governance landscape.
