President John Dramani Mahama has formally initiated the transition process, marking the beginning of his administration.
In line with the Presidential (Transition) Act, 2012 (Act 845), all members of statutory boards, corporations, commissions, and councils appointed by the former President or a former Minister of State have ceased to hold office effective January 7, 2025.
A formal notice issued by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Acting Spokesperson to the President, clarified that this directive does not apply to commissions established as independent constitutional bodies.
The affected statutory entities will be reconstituted in line with their respective enabling laws.
In the interim, the managements of these institutions have been directed to seek clearance from the Chief of Staff before making any significant decisions. This move is aimed at ensuring a smooth transition and maintaining stability in the governance structure.
President Mahama has expressed his gratitude to the affected members for their service and wished them well in their future endeavors. The transition process is expected to be completed in due course, with further updates on the reconstitution of these boards, commissions, and councils forthcoming.
What’s Next?T
The reconstitution of the statutory boards, corporations, commissions, and councils is expected to be a key priority for the Mahama administration. The President has pledged to ensure that the transition process is transparent, efficient, and in line with the laws of Ghana.
The affected institutions will be required to submit their reports and handover notes to the Chief of Staff, who will oversee the transition process. The new appointees are expected to be announced in the coming weeks, and will be tasked with implementing the Mahama administration’s policies and programs.
The Presidential (Transition) Act, 2012 (Act 845)
The Presidential (Transition) Act, 2012 (Act 845) provides a framework for the transition of power from one President to another. The Act requires the outgoing President to hand over power to the incoming President, and provides for the cessation of appointments of statutory board members.
The Act also requires the incoming President to ensure a smooth transition of power, and to take steps to maintain stability in the governance structure. The Mahama administration’s decision to trigger the transition process is in line with the provisions of the Act.
