As President John Dramani Mahama begins his new term in office, the Alliance for WASH Advocacy (A4WA) has called on him to make the Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) sector a top priority.

In an open letter to the President, A4WA Convener Nora Ollennu emphasized the critical importance of access to safe water, improved sanitation, and good hygiene practices for public health, economic growth, and social development.

Despite Ghana’s progress in WASH, significant challenges persist, particularly in rural communities and urban slums.

A4WA highlighted six key areas requiring the President’s attention, including increased budgetary allocations, strengthened policy implementation, and support for NGOs and civil society.

The six key areas are as follows:

The organization outlined six key areas for the President’s attention:

Increase Budgetary Allocations: Adequate financing is needed to address infrastructure gaps and support innovative solutions.

Strengthen Policy Implementation: Robust implementation of existing WASH policies and regulations is necessary to ensure compliance and effectiveness.

Support NGOs and Civil Society: NGOs play a vital role in complementing government efforts, and A4WA urges the President to create an enabling environment for them to thrive.

Focus on Climate-Resilient WASH Systems: Investing in resilient WASH systems is essential to safeguard the health and livelihoods of Ghanaians amidst climate change.

Strengthen WASH Sector Governance: A4WA proposes maintaining the Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resources and establishing clear institutional roles and accountability mechanisms.

Support Research and Innovation: Encouraging research and development of innovative WASH solutions, technologies, and approaches is crucial for progress in the sector.

The organization also stressed the need for climate-resilient WASH systems, strengthened sector governance, and support for research and innovation.

A4WA’s call to action comes at a critical juncture, as Ghana seeks to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and ensure equitable development for all citizens.

By prioritizing the WASH sector, President Mahama can help address these challenges and create a brighter future for Ghanaians.

The Way Forward

A4WA’s recommendations offer a clear roadmap for the Mahama administration to follow. By increasing budgetary allocations and strengthening policy implementation, the government can help address the significant gaps in WASH services.

Supporting NGOs and civil society will also be crucial, as these organizations play a vital role in complementing government efforts and promoting community-led initiatives.

As Ghana moves forward, the importance of prioritizing the WASH sector cannot be overstated. By working together, the government, civil society, and other stakeholders can help create a brighter, healthier future for all Ghanaians.

Therefore A4WA has expressed its commitment to working collaboratively with the government and stakeholders to advance the WASH agenda in Ghana.
