Accra, Ghana – The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has expelled Umar Sanda, a former member of the party, for contesting the upcoming Ayawaso East Constituency by-election as an independent candidate.
The decision, announced in a statement signed by NDC General Secretary Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, takes immediate effect and prohibits Sanda from using the party’s name, logo, colours, insignia, symbols, or any other intellectual property associated with the party in his campaign or related political activities ¹.
The NDC’s action is in response to Sanda’s decision to break ranks with the party and contest against its officially endorsed candidate, Mohammed Baba Jamal Ahmed. According to the party, Sanda’s actions contravene provisions of the NDC’s constitution and its official directive to support a duly elected parliamentary candidate for the constituency.
The Ayawaso East by-election is scheduled for March 3, 2026, following the death of the constituency’s MP, Mahama Naser Toure, on January 4, 2026. The NDC has reaffirmed its commitment to its officially endorsed candidate and will fully participate in the by-election under its approved banner.
The expulsion of Umar Sanda highlights the NDC’s determination to maintain party discipline and unity ahead of the by-election. The move is also seen as a test of the party’s strength and popularity in the Ayawaso East Constituency.
