GNDR Holds International Day For Disaster Risk Reduction

The United Nations General Assembly has designated October 13 as International Day for Disaster Reduction to promote a global culture of disaster risk reduction.
It is in view of this that the Global Network of Civil Society Organisations for Disaster Reduction (GNDR) Ghana, under the offices of UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction( UNDRR) has held the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction under the theme: ” Only Together Can We Save The Planet ”
In a press statement recently signed by Ms Grace Commey, Head of the National Focal Point in Ghana, noted that over the years Ghana has been experiencing a number of disasters which mostly include floods of which the year 2021 is no exception.
She was of the view that “the reduction of mortality, the reduction of the number of people injured, displaced and left without livelihood had never been left more challenging given the scale of the COVID-19 pandemic and the growing climate emergency”.

She further noted that planetary emergencies can only be adequately addressed through impartial and inclusive international cooperation on disaster risk management.
Also that ” international cooperation is essential to ensure that no vulnerable people are left behind in disaster prone settings, including women, children and youth, people with disabilities, the elderly, migrants and indigenous people.
Adding that “this has been one of our major considerations in most of our working strategies. Only together can we save the planet”. She therefore used the opportunity to wish all a happy International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction on behalf of the GNDR.
The focus of this year’s International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction is ” Substantially enhance International cooperation to developing countries through adequate and sustainable support to complement their national actions for implementation of the present Sendia Framework by 2030″.
The International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction takes place just weeks before COP26, a climate change conference that delivers increased levels of ambition and international cooperation on reducing greenhouse gas emissions and climate change adaptation.
