Sports Minister ready to answer more AFCON Budget questions

Written by ...

Youth and Sports Minister, Isaac Asiamah, says that he will be going back to Parliament to answer any question on the country’s expenditure in relation to the 2019 African Cup of Nations tournament in Egypt.

Following the Black Stars’ exit from the tournament, the Minister stated on the floor on Parliament that an amount of $ 4.5 million was spent on the team’s preparations and participation.

He presented the budget breakdown on the 24th of July, 2019.

There have been calls from several quarters for the Minister to give further details of the budget breakdown and he said at Wednesday’s “Meet The Press” session that the budget was being scrutinised by the requisite state bodies and if there were any questions, he would return to Parliament to answer them.

“The accounting mechanism of the Sports Ministry does not end with going to Parliament. We have institutions of accountability such as Parliament and the Auditor-General’s report.

That report is subject to auditing and that will be discussed in Parliament through the Public Accounts Committee. If there are queries, Parliament will call me to come and answer questions.

The final place for the budget is Parliament and so, I will be called if there are things that are not clear or if I am found guilty of any bit of wrongful expenditure.”

The Black Stars lost to Tunisia on penalties in the Round of 16 of the 2019 AFCON tournament in Egypt.
