Former Black Stars captain, Asamoah Gyan has expressed sadness at Ghana’s failure to beat Gabon on Friday.
The Black Stars failed to hang on to a slim 1-0 lead, relinquishing to draw 1-1 in the second group c game at the Ahmadou Ahidjo Stadium.
Captain, Andre Ayew shot the four time African champions into the lead with 26 minutes into the first half of which they held on into the break.
Back from recess, the Panthers looked better with their best opportunity on the 82nd minute which resulted in the equalizer from substitute, Jim Allevinah.
The score line leaves the Black Stars with a must win against debutants, Comoros in the final group game on Tuesday to be able to book the last 16 stage.
Gyan, who is Ghana’s all time top scorer and Africa’s top scorer at the FIFA World Cup, reacted to the draw on Super Sports TV where is a pundit for the 2021 AFCON tournament in Cameroon.
“I’m not a happy man, we deserved the three points but I think we lost a bit of concentration and we conceded the goal in the last minute.
“We cannot keep on conceding goals in the latter stages of the game. “I think [Baba] Iddrisu’s injury was a big blow for Ghana because when he left, you could see everything changed, the style and everything changed.
“I think we should have brought in like two offensive midfielders to be able to kill the game. “We sat back too much, we were defending to much. “We were in control over the game.
You cannot sit back when you are in control over the game, you have to try and kill the game because the Gabonese weren’t that dangerous.
“So we could have gone forward and get a goal but we sit back and then conceded a goal in the latter stages of the game.
“I’m not a happy man. Right now we have to go home and start calculating which we should have won this game but it’s football.
“Let’s see what happens in the next game, we have to just go home with our heads high and then we see what happens in the next game.” Asamoah Gyan said on SuperSports TV.
The Black Stars are looking to end a forty-year trophy drought after last picking the gong at the Libya 1982 edition.
Ghana lost the finals twice – 1-0 to Egypt in 2010 in Angola and 9-8 on penalty shootouts against West African neighbors, Ivory Coast in 2015 in Equatorial Guinea.
They were eliminated in the last 16 by Tunisia at the last edition held in Egypt in 2019.
