A member of the National Council of Elders of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has sounded a warning about the potential dissolution of the party if internal divisions are not resolved ahead of the 2024 general elections.

Christopher Ameyaw-Akumfi stressed the critical need for unity among NPP members, expressing concern that unresolved disputes could harm the party’s electoral chances.

Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi’s remarks follow the National Chairman, Stephen Ntim’s decision to extend an olive branch to Independent Candidate Kwabena Owusu Aduomi after the Ejisu by-election.

He supported Mr Ntim’s move, suggesting that such reconciliation efforts should have been made immediately after the party’s internal elections.

Kwabena Owusu Aduomi, who had issues with the delegates’ album, departed from the NPP to contest as an Independent Candidate.

Despite this, he put up a strong challenge against the NPP’s candidate, Kwabena Boateng, in the by-election, highlighting the impact of internal rifts on the party’s unity.

In an interview with Techiman-based Asta FM on Wednesday, May 1, Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi stressed the urgency for party leadership to reach out to all disgruntled members.

He emphasised the importance of swift action to mend internal divisions and foster unity within the party.

Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi’s call for reconciliation comes amid concerns about the NPP’s electoral prospects in the upcoming polls.

He believes that unity within the party is crucial for success and that addressing internal disputes promptly is necessary to bolster the party’s chances.

“I was touched by the statement from our national chairman about his resolve to reach out to Aduomi. I feel these reconciliation efforts could have been done long ago, especially during the aftermath of the presidential and parliamentary elections, but it is not too late. The writing is on the wall. NPP needs to unite or perish,” he warned.
