The Incorporated Society of Planters (ISP) has announced that Africa is poised to become a major food producer for the world.

Speaking at a media launch, ISP Chairman Dr. Shermal Perara emphasized the importance of sustainable agriculture in ensuring food security for the African population.

Sustainable Agriculture Key to Food Security

Dr. Perara noted that sustainable agriculture is crucial for providing food security for Africa’s growing population.

He cited the example of Malaysia, where the plantation sector played a vital role in the country’s economy, creating employment opportunities and generating foreign exchange earnings.

“The plantation sector in Malaysia has been a significant contributor to the country’s economic growth and development,” Dr. Perara said.

“We believe that Africa can replicate this success story by adopting sustainable agricultural practices.”

Event to Promote Sustainable Agriculture

The ISP is hosting an event themed “AgriUnity: Empowering Sustainable Agriculture in Africa” from May 22-23 in Accra.

The event aims to enhance sustainable agriculture practices on the continent by equipping smallholder farmers with the necessary knowledge and expertise.

The event will bring together delegates from across the world, including Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, Europe, the USA, and several African countries.

It will feature presentations, discussions, and networking opportunities, providing a platform for stakeholders to share knowledge and best practices in sustainable agriculture.

Call for Investment and Sustainability

The Vice Chairman of ISP Africa, Dr. Fatal Afolabi, called for greater investment and capacity development in agriculture, stressing the importance of long-term planning and sustainability.

According to Dr. Afolabi, “Africa has enormous agricultural potential, but we need to take agriculture seriously and adopt it as a practice.”

Adding “We need to invest in capacity development, infrastructure, and technology to enhance productivity and sustainability.”

Mr. Chris Foli, Chairman of ISP Africa’s Ghana Chapter, highlighted the need to prioritize commercial agriculture and food processing to ensure affordability and sustainability.

“Producing affordable, processed food through training and commercial agriculture should be a priority for Africa,” Mr. Foli said.

“We need to add value to our agricultural products and make them competitive in the global market.”

A Step Towards Sustainable Agriculture

The event promises to be a significant step towards advancing sustainable agricultural practices across the continent.

With Africa’s growing population and increasing demand for food, the ISP’s efforts to promote sustainable agriculture are timely and crucial.

The ISP’s initiative is expected to contribute to the African Union’s Agenda 2063, which aims to transform Africa into a global powerhouse of the future.

The agenda emphasizes the importance of sustainable agriculture and food security in achieving economic growth and development.
