Accra- Ghana Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) in Ghana have been encouraged to embrace a more constructive and solution-focused strategy in their interactions with the government and other stakeholders.
This recommendation was made by Chibeze Ezekiel, Executive Coordinator, Strategic Network for Youth Development (SYND), during the Africa Development Bank (AfDB) Mechanism Workshop held on 16th May 2025 in Accra, organized by African Climate Reality Project in partnership with Strategic Network for Youth Development.
Most speakers at the Mechanism Workshop underscored the necessity for CSOs to offer actionable insights and propose viable solutions to policy challenges.
Mr. Chibeze Ezekiel emphasized that while CSOs are vital in fostering good governance, accountability, and transparency, their impact is often diminished by their engagement methods.
“Instead of merely criticizing government policies, CSOs should aim to provide constructive feedback and practical recommendations”, he admonished.
The Executive Coordinator was of the view that “By adopting this approach, CSOs can enhance their credibility, foster collaboration with government entities, and effectively influence policy decisions.”

Meanwhile, he stated that future initiatives will aim to empower CSO members regarding the African Development Bank’s processes, alongside a campaign scheduled for May 25 to remind the bank of its climate finance commitments.
Furthermore, he highlighted the significance of empowering local communities to ensure that CSO efforts yield direct benefits, thereby promoting sustainable development and community empowerment.
Mr. Chibeze Ezekiel was optimistic that by shifting towards a more constructive engagement strategy, CSOs can significantly enhance their role in shaping effective policies and promoting positive change.
On her part, Philanthropy Ghana’s Executive Director, Yaira Blessing Atisu emphasized the importance of Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) engaging with the African Development Bank (AfDB) to ensure the effective implementation of projects and programs.

According to Ms. Yayra Atisu, CSOs have a key role to play in monitoring and evaluation, which is crucial to ensuring that funds are used effectively and have the intended impact.
“CSOs must be abreast with the AfDB mechanisms and engage in all means possible to make sure that their voices are heard,” she said.
Ms. Yayra Blessing Atisu made these remarks during her presentation, which focused on understanding AfDB Mechanisms and Operations in West Africa: Structure, Priorities, and Engagement Pathways for CSO engagement.
She highlighted the need for CSOs to contribute to the project cycle, particularly in ensuring that funds are used for their intended purposes.
Her presentation also touched on the challenges associated with AfDB funding and technicalities but emphasized the importance of CSOs being proactive in their engagement with the bank.
By doing so, CSOs can help ensure that the voices of marginalized communities are heard and that development initiatives are effective and sustainable.
