Accra, August 29, 2026 — Residents in parts of Western Accra are experiencing a temporary interruption in water supply following damage to a major transmission pipeline supplying the affected communities.
The Ghana Water Ltd (GWL) said a 500mm-diameter main pipeline was damaged during excavation works being undertaken by AWERCO Construction Ltd as part of the construction of underground storm drains between Kaneshie First Light and Hansonic Junction.
According to GWL, the excavation works resulted in a burst on the pipeline, causing water to flood the entire trench and disrupting supply to several communities.
GWL engineers and technical teams are currently working to repair the damaged infrastructure, with dewatering works underway to provide access to the affected section of the pipeline.
The company said preparatory works had already commenced at one end of the damaged pipeline as the dewatering exercise continued.
The affected areas include Mallam, Darkuman, Kaneshie, Mataheko, Korle Bu, Mamprobi, Dansoman Township, Chorkor and surrounding communities.
GWL said its technical teams were working around the clock to restore normal water supply to the affected areas as soon as possible.
The disruption highlights the vulnerability of critical urban infrastructure to damage during construction and excavation activities, particularly as Accra continues to undertake drainage and other infrastructure projects to address flooding and related urban challenges.
GWL apologised to customers for the inconvenience caused by the interruption and assured affected communities that efforts were being made to restore supply.
The company said further updates on the progress of the repair works and restoration of water supply would be communicated through its official channels.
