SUHUM, Sept. 9, 2026 — The Assembly Member for the Oforikrom Electoral Area, Hon. Amankwa Emmanuel, has commended Suhum Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Hon. Lydia Ohenewaa Sarah, for initiating the construction of a new classroom block at Suhum Oforikrom Ghanata Junior High School (JHS), replacing an ageing structure that has disrupted teaching and learning over the years.

The MCE cut sod for the three-unit classroom block on Tuesday, September 8, as part of efforts to improve educational infrastructure in the municipality.

The new facility will comprise three classrooms, a staff common room, a four-seater toilet facility, a borehole and other ancillary facilities to provide pupils and teachers with a safer and more conducive learning environment.

The existing block has been in a deplorable condition for years, with rainfall sometimes disrupting lessons and raising concerns among teachers, pupils and residents.

Speaking at the ceremony, Hon. Amankwa, an alumnus of the school and former school prefect of the 2004 batch, expressed joy at the intervention, describing it as a response to a longstanding concern in the community.

“Today is a happy day for me and the people of Oforikrom. God bless our MCE for this beautiful gesture because the school has been in a deplorable state for a very long time. We spoke to our MCE about the deplorable state of the school, she listened and has walked the talk to do this for us because this school has brought a lot of people up,” he said.

He explained that Ghanata JHS, established in the 1990s, had played an important role in education in Suhum by providing junior high school opportunities for pupils from primary schools without JHS facilities.

Over the years, generations of pupils from different parts of the township have attended the school, making the replacement of its deteriorated classroom block an important development for the community.

Hon. Amankwa expressed gratitude to the MCE and her team for responding to the community’s concerns.

Assembly begins sanitation projects

The MCE also cut sod for the paving of the Suhum Ayekotse Urban Council premises and the construction of a four-seater toilet facility.

The projects are expected to improve the condition of the public space and enhance sanitation and hygiene within the Nartey Anomah Electoral Area.

Speaking to the media after the ceremonies, Hon. Lydia Ohenewaa Sarah said the deteriorated state of Ghanata JHS had made it necessary to replace the old block with a new facility that would provide better conditions for teaching and learning.

She noted that the Ayekotse Urban Council premises hosted numerous events but needed significant improvements. The Assembly plans to pave the entire area and construct stores around it to protect and improve the facility.

“These projects are a testament to our ongoing efforts to build a better Suhum together. We are committed to investing in education, health and sanitation, the pillars of a thriving community.

“We believe that by improving our infrastructure, we are creating opportunities for growth and prosperity for everyone in Suhum,” she stated.

Other projects underway

The sod-cutting ceremonies form part of a wider programme of infrastructure development being undertaken by the Suhum Municipal Assembly, with a focus on education, healthcare and sanitation.

Other projects cited by the Assembly include the Adarkwa Community-based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) Compound and nurses’ quarters; the Bono Densuso kindergarten block, staff common room, kids’ eatery and four-seater toilet facility; and the Nankese Amanfrom CHPS Compound.

The Assembly says it will continue working with stakeholders to improve access to essential infrastructure and services across the municipality.

The projects are expected to improve learning conditions, healthcare delivery, sanitation and public facilities as implementation progresses.
