National Chairman of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, is saying that the ongoing demonstration by the NDC is to prevent anarchy from befalling the State.
He says the conduct of the Electoral Commission (EC) can create a problem, something the NDC is trying to avoid with its protest.
The party’s demonstration against the EC is ongoing in all 16 regional capitals across the country today, Tuesday, September 17, 2024.
This follows a directive by the NDC leadership to carry out this protest in all the regional offices to present a petition to the Commission to register its displeasure over what it describes as a bloated register.
Speaking to participants at the Nkrumah interchange, popularly known as ‘Circle’, in Accra, Johnson Asiedu Nketia noted that their action is in furtherance to what Sergeant Adjetey, Corporal Attipoe, and Private Odartey Lamptey, did on February 28, 1948, at the Christianborg Castle at Osu, which resulted in the riots leading to the peak of the fight for Ghana’s independence.
According to him, the three ex-servicemen “fought, some people died, but that is the reason why we are living today.”
“And so today is our time. We must not let our ancestors down. We must not let our future generations down. It is our time to fight. What we are doing is to prevent war in this country. If you want to prevent war, you fight to remove everything that has the tendency to generate into war.
“There is no sitting on the fence. If you sit on the fence today and allow conflict to mature into war, you will be conscripted into the army to fight and die. So, instead of waiting for war to break, for you to be conscripted to go and fight and die, fight now against the elements that are generating the conflict,” he told the crowd.
