Abdul Majeed Bawa, the Deputy Director General of the National Sports Authority (NSA), has disclosed that the authority has decided not to overburden national stadiums that host matches for the national teams.
Following Ghana’s close call last month, he made these remarks when it almost had to play its 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Sudan abroad.
The Baba Yara Sports Stadium’s approval to host CAF Category Three matches was suspended by the continent’s football governing body just before the Sudan game.
The government had to take urgent steps to get the Accra Sports Stadium approved for the match.
To prevent such occurrences in the future, Majeed emphasized that stadia maintenance would be taken seriously.
“In this region of the world, many believe that the facility belongs to the state and that it is the state’s responsibility to maintain it. So you have teams that patronize the pitches around, but they are not interested in assisting pitch managers in preserving them,” he told Akoma FM.
“Moving forward, we will ensure that the status is maintained; we will not take the pitch maintenance lightly and will not put pressure on it.”
