Accra, Ghana – Ghana Water Limited has launched ten Revenue Enhancement Teams nationwide to tackle non-revenue water, improve revenue collection, and ensure sustainability of the company’s operations.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Adam Mutawakilu, Managing Director of Ghana Water Limited highlighted the company’s operational and financial challenges, including escalating operational costs, aging infrastructure, production constraints, and customer indebtedness.

He noted that non-revenue water stands at 52%, with commercial losses accounting for 78% of the losses. In the Accra-Tema Metropolitan Area, 71 million gallons of water are lost daily due to non-revenue water, while nationally, 114 million gallons are lost daily.

The Revenue Enhancement Teams will focus on detecting and eliminating illegal connections, verifying meters, correcting billing anomalies, and educating customers on voluntary compliance.

The teams will work closely with commercial, technical, and legal units to achieve their mandate. Since August 2025, three pilot teams have uncovered 217 illegal connections, detected 239 illegal connections, and charged GH¢ 8.6 million, with GH¢ 2.1 million recovered.

The Managing Director, Adam Mutawakilu appealed to customers to pay their water bills promptly and engage the company if they face challenges. “Every cedi collected supports chemicals, electricity, plant maintenance, pipe replacements, network expansion, technology upgrades, and service improvement for our customers,” he said.

He emphasized that Ghana Water Limited’s sustainability is a shared responsibility, and customers play a crucial role in ensuring the company’s continued operations.

Ghana Water Limited has implemented digital transformation measures, including mobile payment options, SMS and email billing, a customer app for real-time account access, call centres, and social media support, and flexible payment plans for genuine hardship cases.

The launch of the Revenue Enhancement Teams marks a new chapter in the company’s journey towards accountability, efficiency, innovation, and service excellence. The Managing Director officially inaugurated the teams, emphasizing the importance of sustainability and customer support. “Ghana Water Limited belongs to all of us. Its sustainability is our shared responsibility,” he said.

The Managing Director also highlighted the company’s production constraints, noting that daily water demand stands at approximately 350 million gallons, while the company’s treatment facilities can only produce 220 million gallons, leaving a deficit of 130 million gallons daily. In the Accra-Tema Metropolitan Area, demand is 210 million gallons per day, while supply is only 137 million gallons, resulting in a shortfall of 73 million gallons daily.

The Revenue Enhancement Teams are expected to play a crucial role in addressing these challenges and ensuring that Ghana Water Limited delivers safe, reliable, and affordable potable water to every Ghanaian.
