WAEC debunks Eduwatch report on exams leakage … says it is untrue and misleading

Report by: Ben LARYEA

The West African Examination Council (WAEC) has debunked information issued by African Education Watch (Eduwatch) about the alleged examination leakage of Food and Nutrition paper 3 to the public as untrue, misleading and have called on the general public to disregard the statement.

“Reckless circulations of such reports creates needless pressure on WAEC, students, parents and stakeholders in the educational sector”, she charged, adding that local and international bodies that admits Ghanaians into their tertiary institutions will doubt the credibility of certificates”.

She further said that this is not the first time the Council have received misleading information from Eduwatch.

According to WAEC, the information is false and have created anxiety among candidates, parents and the general public.

At a news conference in Accra to give an update on the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for school candidates, 2021, the Head of the National Office, Mrs Wendy Addy-Lamptey said the Council is at a loss of the real intention behind Eduwatch actions.

Explaining that, Eduwatch must exhibit due diligence before issuing statements to the general public pointing out that if care is not taken, WAEC and the country at large will be frowned upon by the international community about the country’s education and its related exams.

WAEC however commended all media houses who took it upon themselves to crosscheck the facts from the Council and urged others who are not privy to the issues to be circumspect in their reportage on the alleged exams leakage,” she said, adding that, the gesture creates unnecessary tension, fear and panic.

“Our doors are open to all and ready to engage on issues to protect the image of the Council,” Mrs Wendy Addy-Lamptey said.

Turning the spotlight on rogue websites and WhatsApp groups, the Head of National Office said the activities of the said groups is to cheat and mentioned “Smart WASSCE Hub” as one of the deceiving WhatsApp groups that claim it can assist students to pass exams.

The Council’s security operatives  she stated are on the alert and are working fervently to bring the perpetrators to book and cautioned students not to join such platforms as well appealed to Invigilators and Supervisors to be vigilant and refrain from taking their mobile phones to the exams hall.

She therefore advised students to comply with the rules and regulations governing examination practices and used the occasion to urge students to strictly adhere to the Covid-19 protocols.
