Two convicted for keeping and rearing cattle under insanitary conditions at Accra New Town

The La District Magistrate Court has convicted two persons Ghc2,160.00 or one-month imprisonment each for rearing cattle in a residential area and under insanitary conditions.

The two Najib Samir and Wahab Haruna were convicted on their own plea of guilty to three counts of insanitary keeping and rearing cattle in a residential area contrary to Section 56 (a&b) of the Public Health Act 851 of 2012, insanitary kraal emanating offensive odour contrary to Section 56 (a&b) of the Public Health Act 851 of 2012 and keeping and rearing of cattle in a residential area without authorization from the Ayawaso North Municipal Assembly.

The two were also ordered to relocate their kraals within one month or be rearrested.

A third accused person Fati Salam who pleaded guilty to two counts of absence of household toilet and insanitary bathroom was granted self recognisance bail with a bail sum of Ghc 8,000.00 to reappear on 30th August, 2023.

Presenting the facts Isaac Ar-Eng Wakah the Environmental Health Prosecutor for the Ayawaso North Municipal Assembly told the court that on the 4th of July, 2022, Environmental Health Officers acting upon a complaint by residents of Accra New Town inspected their kraals and seeing the potential Public Health hazard their activities poses to the neighbourhood ordered the relocation of the kraals from the mist of residential premises which they failed to hence their been dragged to the court.

Speaking to the media the Prosecutor for the Ayawaso North Municipal Assembly, Isaac Ar-Eng Wakah advised residents to demystify the myth that Zongo communities are filthy by adapting good sanitation practices in their daily lives.

He said the assembly has done a lot of sensitization on proper waste management and household latrines and will therefore not spare anyone who flaws any sanitation law of the assembly.

On the keeping and rearing of animals the Prosecutor said though the assembly promotes small scale farming it will not countenance on public health for animal farming.

He said the congested nature of the municipality is not compatible with the keeping and rearing of animals and advised farmers to observe the highest level of cleanliness or the face the laws of the assembly.
