The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has voiced deep concern over reports of vandalism and looting of state properties in various parts of the country following the December 7 elections. According to the NDC, these acts are being carried out by individuals believed to be disgruntled supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and overly enthusiastic supporters of the NDC.
At a press conference, the NDC’s National Communications Officer, Mr. Sammy Gyamfi, emphasized that the party unequivocally condemns such acts of lawlessness.
The conference, signed by NDC General Secretary Mr. Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, attributed some of the incidents to frustrations over alleged hoarding of state-procured food items and fertilizers by NPP parliamentary candidates as part of voter-inducement strategies.
The NDC also acknowledged that some of these unfortunate incidents stemmed from overly jubilant NDC supporters celebrating the party’s resounding electoral victory.
While appreciating the legitimate frustrations of Ghanaians with the outgoing Akufo-Addo-led administration, the NDC urged its supporters and all citizens to exercise restraint and celebrate responsibly. The party reiterated its commitment to upholding probity, accountability, and the rule of law when it assumes office on January 7, 2025.
“Vandalism of state property, mob justice, and any form of lawless retribution have the potential to undermine the peace and stability of our dear nation. Such acts are unacceptable and constitute grievous offenses under the laws of Ghana,” Mr. Gyamfi stated.
The NDC called on its members across all 16 regions to maintain calm, exercise patience, and trust the incoming government to address grievances through lawful means. Mr. Gyamfi concluded with a rallying message: “Our hard-fought victory is here. Let’s celebrate responsibly as we prepare to usher in an era of accountability and governance guided by the rule of law.”
