The Ghana Water Limited (GWL) is facing a severe crisis as encroachment around the Kpeve Water Treatment Plant in the Volta Region poses a major threat to water quality, operations, and supply.

The Managing Director of GWL, Hon. Adam Mutawakilu, has sounded the alarm, warning that human activities close to the water intake point have severely affected the raw water quality, forcing the company to intermittently shut down production.

During his inspection visit to the facility on Wednesday, 22nd October, 2025, Hon. Mutawakilu revealed that human activities close to the water intake point have severely affected the raw water quality, forcing the company to intermittently shut down production.

“The situation has led to a drastic increase in turbidity levels, from about 5 NTU to 140 NTU, making treatment extremely difficult”, he lamented.

The GWL Managing Director emphasized that if the encroachment is not stopped, it will not only affect water supply in Kpeve but could set a dangerous precedent for other water intake facilities across Ghana.

He further disclosed that the company has followed due administrative procedures, including writing to the Minister for Sanitation and Water Resources and holding a stakeholder meeting, but the developer has ignored the directive to suspend operations.

Addressing the media, Hon. Mutawakilu called on the National Security Secretariat to intervene immediately to stop the developer and reclaim the affected area to its natural state.

Stressing that, “We do not want any developer or construction to take place close to any of our water intakes,” emphasizing the need to protect the integrity of Ghana’s water sources.

The Kpeve Water Treatment Plant currently has a production capacity of 18,000 cubic meters per day, serving thousands of residents in the Volta Region. The intermittent shutdowns have resulted in water supply disruptions, affecting residents and businesses in the area.
